Studying Science
Big Idea:
Scientists answer questions about the world around us by carrying out careful investigations.
Lesson 1: What do Scientists Do?
Vocabulary:
Scientist - ask questions about the natural world Science - is the study of the natural world Observation - information collected by using the five senses Investigation - a process conducted to answer questions Hypothesis - an idea or explanation that can be tested with an investigation.

Day 1:
Goal: Today we will learn all our new vocabulary words for this unit and preview the Scientific Method using a rap song!
Day 2: Goal: Today we will discover that scientists ask questions, make observations, and conduct investigations in order to produce evidence.
Goal: Today we will learn that scientists perform multiple types of investigations.
Goal: Today we will apply what we have learned about making observations while doing a quick lab on the reaction between light and our eyes.
Goal: Today we will expand our learning by either finishing the virtual lesson or by discovering our own wonders.

Observe How Eyes React to Light
Your teacher will dim the lights in the room. Wait 2 minutes until your eyes adjust to the new light level in the room. Then observe your partner's eyes. Look carefully at the pupils. Continue to observe your partner's eyes as your teacher turns on the lights again. How did your partner's pupils change after the lights became brighter? Why do you think this happened. Draw an eye in your journal, label the pupil, and describe what you observed today. |
Lesson 2: What Skills Do Scientists Use?
Day 1-2 Goal: Today we will complete the digital lesson as a class. You will need your journals as we take notes on all the important vocabulary and concepts. Copy the outline to the right to begin note taking. Day 3-4 Goal: Today we will complete a lab that allows us to apply everything we've learned about the scientific process. 1. Separate into groups of 4 2. Each group needs 2 packets of "Earthworm Behavior." 3. Everyone needs their own Experiment Recording Sheet (see picture and link to the right). This will be what you turn in to be graded at the end of the experiment. Day 5 - Wrap Up Goal: Today we will review the important topics of this lesson and take the Lesson 2 Quiz (paper or thinkcentral.com) 1. Review notes with a partner 2. Take quiz 3. Lesson 3: How do Scientists Collect and Use Data?
Vocabulary:
Data - the bits of information you collect Microscope - a tool for looking at objects that can not be seen with the eye alone Pan Balance - used to measure mass with units called grams Spring Scale - used to measure force in units called newtons
Day 1:
Goal: We will be able to identify different tools that scientists use to study objects and properties.
- 1. Discuss: What tools do you already know scientists use? Do you know what they use them for?
3. Start the digital lesson on Think Central
Day 2:
- Goal: Today we will explore why scientists often conduct research as part of an investigation.
- Read and Discuss "Research is Key," "Science Tools," and "Measurement Tools." P. 29-33
- Journal: Quiz a partner on the science tools in your journal.
- Goal: Today we will learn how to record data in appropriate tables and charts based on the purpose of that data.
- Read and Discuss "Recording and Displaying Data" and "Using Data."
- With a Partner complete "Word Play" on P. 39
- Goal: Today we will apply what we have learned about using tools and recording data to a quick experiment.
- Spin - A - Copter Investigation
- Homework P. 40
- Goal: Today we will expand our learning by either finishing the virtual lesson or by discovering our own wonders.
- Grade Journals
- Finish Digital Lesson or Wonderopolis

Lesson 5: What Kind of Models Do Scientists Use?
Vocabulary:
Model-represents something that is real that is too big, too small, or has to many parts to investigate directly. Two-dimensional- a model with only length and width Three-dimensional-an object that has length, width, and height Computer Model-a computer program that models an event or object
